US - Central America Free Trade Agreement
The US is exporting ever-more processed foods, as well as meat, to the region, while making it harder for farmers there to supply healthy foods for the local market.
This case involves a dispute between TECO, an energy company incorporated in the United States, and the Republic of Guatemala, over electricity rates.
A TECO Energy subsidiary has won a $21.1 million award in a business claim against the government of Guatemala.
It is politically inconceivable that the Democratic majority in Congress -- which voted against CAFTA when it was approved here -- would move to punish Costa Rica for its voters having rejected the same agreement.
